Though no brand of condom can give you a 100% protection from Sexually Transmitted Disease (STDs) and pregnancies they are very important.
It has been said that condoms are "highly effective" in preventing the sexual transmission of HIV and many other STDs WHEN USED CORRECTLY, with up to 98% efficiency.
Basically condoms prevent skin-to-skin contact between the genitals of the man and woman during sexual intercourse, thereby reducing risks of infections and pregnancies.
However, the effectiveness of a condom is dependent on how it is used.

- Always check the expiration date before using it because old condoms can dry and crack during sex
- Latex condoms are better and thought to be most effective in preventing STDs
- Store your condoms away from heat and light because it can make them more likely to break
- Only use water-based lubricants with condoms because lotion, petroleum jelly, or baby oil can erode the condom and cause leaks
- Open the condom packet with your hands – not your teeth! – carefully so you don't tear the condom and render it useless
- Wear a condom before any genital contact occurs because pre-cum can lead to pregnancy and you can also get infected
- Use a condom with a reservoir tip to catch semen after ejaculation and ensure you lightly pinch the top of the condom and place it at the top of your penis to get rid of trapped air – trapped can cause a condom to burst during sex
- Roll down the condom down until it has completely rolled out
- If you mistakenly wear the condom inside out, remove it and THROW it away
- After sex/ejaculation, hold the condom at the base of the penis and withdraw slowly so that the condom does not slip off into the vagina
- Never reuse a condom once you remove it from the penis
Note that it is good to always use a condom but abstinence is the only thing that can give you 100% protection from STIs, STDs and other risks.
